I need some help, my dad's '97 2.5l auto Diesel has problems starting in the morning.

Firstly it needs a hell of a lot of cranking and finally she starts after about a minute with a massive cloud of black smoke.

It had a new battery a few weeks and and a new fuel pump as the old one was leaking a bit.

All the problems started after it had a service at a main dealer about 4 months ago, a bit too long to take it back and complain.

Is it possible that it has the wrong glow plugs fitted, do you get different heat ratings?

any ideas as its getting annoying.

Regards.

We had and traded on a 93' which wouldent' stop or start on key in the end, the pump was actually eating itself from the stop plunger back,
we suffered about 800 notes damage for a replacement from local diesel specialist before getting rid of it
no more landy's thank you...

It sounds like, the glow plugs or the relay for them is faulty, if was a feul pump the problem would nearly always be there,( smoking all the time )

So because you had one problem with one Land Rover, they're all rubbish?

No, this was the final straw,

shaking steering (and not un-balanced wheels)

Leaking sunroof(s) from instant of using them

Gear linkage required a clutch exchange under warranty

Steering pump failed leaking fluid all over the shop

For us, it was an unmitigated disaster compared to my bosses BMW assembled version of a few years later.
all around something of a let-down build wise having been to look at a number before selecting this one, as it looked, and had MOT'd OK even with something of a reciept/service history
looking back, I might have wondered why owners from new, had fitted a new tow pack& , just prior to trading it in, where we took it over.

I wouldent say all land-rover and particulary Solihull product are shit, but our experience had me wishing i'd hung onto my Hi-lux after all...
