I wonder if this is a known problem with this engine and if anyone can help me avoid a wild goose chase

A few weeks ago I was driving on the motorway and an engine management system light came. The car switched into limp home mode at around 50pmh. The message only lasted a few seconds, I then pulled over and restarted the engine to find everything was OK. It then happened a few times a week later, but this time I was restricted to about 30 mph. When it happens I get a message on the media screen which says the terrain response system isn’t working, but its hard to know whether this is the cause or a response to it.

I took it to my local garage for diagnostics and it seems the turbo boost pressure sensor (or similar) had thrown a signal and it was suggested we put a new sensor in. We did this on Thursday, but yesterday I got the same message and symptoms again. Again the the engine management message goes after about 5-10 seconds and if I turn the car off and start it again its perfectly fine.

Its hard to be sure, but I feel the car lacks a bit of power and I am struggling to get more than about 22mpg on average, compared with 24 some months ago. It is sometimes taking a few seconds to start, which has never happened before.

Any thoughts on known issues? thanks James

TDV8s can be prone to split turbo hoses, so I would suggest that would be a good starting point.
After that, it could be any number of things, EGR valves, MAF sensors, turbos.

Yep, could be any number of things and by the sound of it your sensor was correct!

As it runs for a little bit, it sounds like the turbos are OK and I'm tempted to suggest the EGR side of things. However, don't discount a split in one of the hoses.

If it is turbo related... Brace yourself!!

Thanks chaps - it runs fine for 99% of the time, though I'm increasingly thinking it might be a bit down on power. Hard to tell really.

Its going back it for a more thorough look over this week.

Could be a crank sensor, had something similar on a 3.0l BMW diesel

Could be a faulty brake light too but given the set of symptoms, it's more likely to be something in the induction system. wink

Seems to have been a split hose - car feels much better now, so hopefully we've got it!

Thanks all
