Hi Folks,
I have a 1969 series 2A fitted with a SD1 V8 and a BW65 Auto box (more than 20 years ago just before I bought it).

It hardly does any miles, last year about 200, not because it is a show winner - far from it, as it is used and abused as a workhorse when needed.

From Cold it starts on the button regardless of how long been it's left or damp cold etc.
However when it gets hot and is turned off it will not crank until it has cooled down.

The starter was changed about 10 years ago (and has not done anywhere near average start events since), I have changed the Ingition switch recently (I had the problem before this). The switch on the auto lever for park and neutral is sound.
There is nothing "clever" in circuit imobilisers/alarms etc. All cables are tight - just don't get it.

Any ideas welcome - thanks in anticipation.

Is the fuel pump ok? If it's a bit tired that might give you duff hot starting.

Thanks but it is definately an electrical problem as the solenoid is not even "throwing" - the starter won't crank until cool

Is there power at the starter? If not then it's a wiring switch problem. If there then the starter is knackered.

Check relays that control the starter. Its a common fault in rangies. The bosch relay gives up the ghost after a wjile. Sometimes tapping it works.

Thanks Guys you pointed it to the correct area - the starter. It's being tested today and will probably need Solenoid overhaul.

I spoke to www.guyautoelectrics.co.uk, they said it is common or Rover V8's for the solenoid not to energise when the motor is hot. Hot sometimes by engine heat not necessarily electrically hot.

Thanks again - problem sorted - I think.

One of the problems with V8 conversions is the solonoid off the starter is very close to the exhaust down pipe. A solution is to wrap the starter with a heat blanket available off eBay works a treat.
