Afternoon all, I'm currently thinking of buying a Freelander, around V to X reg, that sort of year. Are there any things I should really look out for or any particular areas that cause problems. Any advice gladly received. Thanks and have a Happy Christmas, SiH

dont go for the 1.8ltr.Ok in an MGF and a lotus elise, but way stressed in a freelander.there has been to many problems with piston melt down and head gaskets blowing on these engines purely down to them being under to much stress.

Try and go for a TD4 if you can find one. I have just put the first 2K miles on our Freelander HSE and I absolutely love it to pieces.

I cant wait to get a few more miles on it so that it loosens up even more.

If you want auto then consider the V6 version. 0-60 in 10secs and very smooth. Sounds good too. I've just paid 8.5k for a 1 owner 2001 ES which was about £3-4k less than an equivalent TD4. When I've had it LPG converted it will do about 40mpg (more than a TD4), still have 170bhp and I'll still be in pocket. Win, win, win!

The TD4 is a very good engine however and who knows how long LPG will be as cheap as it is now but it's worth a thought......

V6 and TD4 are both MY2001 on ...

You're left with 2.0TD or 1.8 petrol. Diesel is a bit slow, 1.8 is adequate.

Any landie is expensive to run ...

Si

Sorry to hijack the thread but I'm hoping that the Freelander will be in addition to, rather than a replacement for () the Chimaera?

BTW, the Chim's booked into Austec for the exhaust mod. After following you home in October, I knew it was only a matter of time...

Agree with Legin, Mrs N17 TVR's 2.5 V6 auto is very smooth to drive, forget the 1.8 not enough power.

Even the latest Td4's are too noisy for my liking, but a nice engine in terms of power delivery.

How can an engine which does 26mpg normally do 40mpg on LPG????

LPG is slightly less efficient than petrol so I would expect 24-25mpg

You would get double the mileage for the same money but you wouldn't get double the mpg!!!

OK. What I should have said was "equivalent to 40MPG" - I was working on LPG being half the price of petrol and doing 20MPG.

Sorry I didn't explain that clearly enough for everyone.......

Ok, I'm glad we got that one settled!

Anyhoo....

The TD4 is the best engine in the lineup unless you compare it to a LPG'd V6 which wins with better acceleration and economy.

My better half has a 2001 Superchipped TD4, it doesn't turn it into a hot hatch (At 1700Kg it takes alot more than 25 extra ponies to do that) but it does give it better in gear acceleration without sacrificing fuel economy (32.5 mpg average without any motorway miles)!

Just be very wary of the rest of the car....

They don't come very high on reliability tests for a very good reason (well several actually)

Thats not strictly true. The majority of k series engine failures are down to people not bleeding the water system properly.

...and of course the 1.8k is very easy to tune. A reliable and drivable 150-160 bhp is obtainable for a modest outlay.

dont buy one they are cr@p and can cost a packet to run. Totally wasted money. IF you need an off roader then buy a proper off roader. If you need space for a family then buy a 3 series estate.
A friend of mine runs a landrover service centre and doesnt recommend them!
