I love my Defender to bits - I must do as bits is what keep falling off her.

My list:

1. driver's door handle came off (replaced)
2. gear knob disintegrated (cannot be replaced!! WTF???)
3. windscreen cracked (replaced)
4. all four universal joints failed (replaced)
5. tyre blew out (all four replaced)
6. headlight failed (bulb replaced)
7. both headlights failed ----pending---
8. flat battery (replaced)
9. rear doorsill went rusty (sorted and painted)
10. rear passenger door opener surround fell off -----pending-----
11. currently making an interesting graunching noise when reversing under hard lock, but I think (hope) it is just a new tyre rubbing. -----pending----
12. air-con packed up (fixed)
13. after resealing, regassing and three months, air-con packed up again. ---pending----
14. winch cable snapped. ---pending----
15. brake light smashed ---replaced---

Always something to do on this car, but nothing too serious yet (touch aluminium) -I suppose that is all part of its 'character'

She is a 2008 2.4tdci, had her about 18 months and she has done about 47,000 miles.

What's your list like?

I feel sorry for you, clearly you are not benefitting from the proper Landie experience!

2005 LR3 4.4 V8 owned since april 2013,

Fuel Pump
Rear Propshaft
All front suspensions bushes
New radiator
All front bushes again.

Rotary coupler requires replacing, i have to beep the horn three times for the CC to work.

I have also replaced all the tyres twice and replaced all pads and discs plus a service, so quite an expensive year for me.

2008 D3 79k miles. fking bd wking piece of crap. Had suspension fault and engine fault both appear in the display last week. Turns out it needs a ride height sensor, and possibly a compressor...and also a turbo - which needs the body jacking off to fix!!! Both can only be done by a main dealer and they're going to want it for over a week. Currently researching the going rate for kidneys in anticipation of the bill. grumpy

Stick a new battery on it first and see if those faults mysteriously vanish.

897sma..

Try this. I thought I needed a new turbo, turns out the actuator was sticking. Cost me £6 to fix!
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic98502.html?high...

My guide is at the bottom of page one, you only need simple tools for it.

My own car.
54 plate D3. Has 122k and is used for everything, inc off roading.
I've changed a bit through wear and tear and also because I hope to keep the car for a long time.

All 8 wishbones.
4 arbs.
4drop links.
Steering lower column, inner arms and track rod ends.
Rear hub bushes.
Brake flex lines at front, rear brake lines.
Air con condensor.
Starter motor.
Rear propshaft.
Upgraded to RRS Brembo front calipers with better pads and discs.
Upgraded rear pads and discs and new handbrake shoes.
1 front parking sensor, still need 2 rear inners.
Upgraded xenon bulbs to osram cool blue intense.
Put Goodyear Duratrac tyres on it, will need another set at the end of summer.

Expensive car but I've sorted all the wear and tear items so it's now good for another 80k before needing more work.

Where do I start:-

2004 td6 Range Rover

5 gearboxes, one lasted only 1200 miles!
1 Transfer gearbox
2 back axles
9 front diffs
1 rear prop shaft
2 turbo's (although there was nothing wrong with the old ones)
Serpentine bent
a couple of suspension airbags

and a few other niggles that i cannot remember.

Most others Land Rovers have been similarly fault free

I would add to mine, only the starter motor solinoid packing in stopped it starting and moving.
Everything else is due to 9 1/2 years of use, wear and tear or wishing to upgrade from standard to better parts.

Mine does get a fair bit of abuse off roading but to it's credit, it laps it all up.

Easily the best car i've owned, however in a couple of years it will be at the strange point where it's worth more in parts than a whole car..

There is nothing that can only be done by a main dealer, but there's a truckload that can't be done by a non-specialist independent.

Including an awful lot of diagnostic work.

There are plenty of specialists in Derbyshire that could do this at a fraction of the rate of the main dealer.

07 D3 manual

EPB
Alternator
Battery
Front lower wishbones (warranty)
Front pads (twice) and discs (considered consumables)
Rear pads (twice) and discs (considered consumables)
EGR valves (both sides)
Some valve in the aircon system (warranty)
Tyres (considered consumables)
Parking sensors are on the fritz but I'm not sure which ones.
Reloaded software for gearbox
Clutch pedal switch failed
Front fog lights failed and needed rewiring (warranty)
Air compressor replaced

I will also need to get its steering angle sensor and wheel geometry looked at, give it its 105k service in the next month or so, possibly replace the rear upper arm bushes, have upper manifold/gaskets looked at as a result of the failed EGR's, and get the standard intercooler hoses replaced with silicone ones...

The MOT is being done next week, so I'll have a further update then... smash

ETA1 to add Clutch pedal switch
ETA2 to add foglight issue
ETA3 to add new air compressor

Jep, I would recommend getting the oil pump casing changed as well.
There is an issue with 07 ones cracking after the belts have been done and causing the tensioner bolt to sheer, and then you need a new engine..

MY2000 Defender 90 TD5.......
New rear cross member rolleyes
Recon gearbox. :-(
New steering box.
Plus a few new bushes and UJs down the line (which is nearly 200,000 miles long now, about half of them green)
And a nightmare wiring fault traced eventually to two shorting wires behind the near side front sidelight.furious
Oh and I replaced the original doors....the rear two-piece with the later one-piece "rounded window" variety, and the front doors with lighter, simpler Series doors.driving
Upgraded the seats and transfer box.
Added additional soundproofing.

Can't quite believe all the D3 faults. Electronics not the answer then?

Not the answer to what?

Most of the D3 electrical challenges I've read about boil down to the clockspring connector for the steering wheel controls, a couple of silly, vulnerable splice joints in the loom, worn-out brake light switches and poor-quality brake light bulbs - the rest is down to dealers' 'fitter' approach to diagnostics and non-specialist indie ignorance.

My SAAB had just as many worn suspension components by 100k as my D3, and my Espace was on its third battery/alternator combo, it's second EGR valve, its second inlet manifold and its second gearbox - except it didn't actually get to 100k because it threw a rod instead.
