Hi all

I have had my 2010 Range Rover sport HSE for 3 months now and I am looking to downsize the wheels. They currently have 20" alloys which I think make the ride harder than necessary, I also have pinched ns front tyre twice and slightly curbed the alloy by doing nothing more than bumping up a curb at manouver speed. I also find these wheels less than inspiring in poor weather conditions.

I used to have a 2006 FFRR with 19" wheels standard six spoke affairs, and these were almost impossible to curb and gave a much greater ride in all conditions.

In short what are peoples thoughts about putting the alloys mentioned above on a Range Rover sport? Or does anyone have any better suggestions?

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon,

I have the exact same problem with a '12' plate RRS, and I have to say that the 'arrangement' with these wheels is, IMHO, totally stupid.

In fact I discussed this with the main dealer and they admitted that they have a regular influx of RRS customer coming in with damaged 20" wheel rims for refurbishing - so mus so, it has become the 'norm'!

To equip such a capable car that can 'eat' rugged terrain with wheels like these seems ridiculous!
I have had a number of LR derivatives over the years, including a 'classic' RR (loved that car), and Disco 3, all of which would go anywhere with no concerns about rim bashing...

And so, I have tried seeking some sort of definitive answer to this with very little concrete response. All I have managed to glean is that provided you don't have 'Brembo' brakes (Supercharged version?) which I think are red in colour, you can downsize to 19", something I might do later on as the rims and tyres together are somewhat expensive.

Hope that helps..

Keith

Brembo calipers fit under 19s.

Much better tyre choice available as well. smile

You can downsize to some 19s off a Discovery, have a look on www.rrsport.co.uk

Im thinking of getting a set for winter. Same issue. I used to have a Range Rover on winter tyres, changed to a RRS a year ago and came with ultra bling 20" polished wheels that are soon to be refurbed in matt grey like my old ones - easy to clean smile

FWIW - Brembo brakes are fitted as standard to the SC, TDV8 and an option for the V6.

If you've got Brembo brakes, there are only 2x types of 19" rim that will fit. You have to be very specific with the part numbers too...

If you haven't got Brembos, you should be able to fit petty much anything that fits a D4.

This is useful info guys..

I presume Brembo brakes are 'coloured' then, rather then the std dirty grey?
If so, just as a matter of interest, are there any 18" rims that would fit a non-brembo RRS?

Brembo brakes are grey. I just painted mine Subaru blue ridge pearl to be different.
Plus you never got the brakes as standard on a D3, i upgraded to them.

There are 18 inch wheels as standard on SE spec RRS, and 17s on S spec models. So there are choices for you. smile

Thanks for all your replies. I have just bought some 19" wheels with a 255 55 profile same as I had on my FFRR. I will keep you all updated with how I get on with these on the sport.

I tried 19 and 20" on both my RRS - both are equally as bad.
I have never had a car with wheels designed so badly - the rim simply protrudes too far.

It doesn't seem to be a problem on my present rr, so if it is possible, it may be worth you fitting some rr wheels.
Some oem wheels with new tyres go way cheaper (on ebay) than from main dealer.

As mentioned, I have a RRS Red edition with std 20" wheels, but there is no mention on what kind of brake callipers they use... If Brembo's are grey (as mine are), then how can I tell?

Hi all

I have fitted new wheels and can report that the ride is now much more forgiving. The tyres stand proud of the rim so now they should be hard to curb. With no real bad weather as such to test them I can't report of any improvement on that front, but having had this wheel tyre combination before on a FFRR I don't for see any problems.

For the record they are 19" rims with 255 55 Pirelli Scorpion Zero tyres.

Simon, I’ve just tried fitting the exact same L322 wheels (19in) to my TDV8 with Brembos and the wheel hits the callipers, did you use spacers or are yours non Brembos?

Cheers Rob

A RRS of this generation with very deep section tyres will be very bouncy and potentially unstable at speed in higher speed maneuvers .

I took my 20" sport wheels off my 2010 RRS too . . . . and put on 22's.
I havent noticed any deterioration in ride quality nor road noise after moving up in size and moving down in profile.

I also have no fear or kerbing them either as Im careful when parking and I cant remember the last time I had to go up\ over a kerb.

Yes I run the risk of hitting a pothole but more often than not I tend to drive at speeds where I would see one coming - I could still hit one granted but thats just life and the odds we run with.
I always laugh at people moaning about wheels \ tyres and easy to kerb - erm try being more careful.
