What to look for

Frankly, I wouldn't.
Had one before I had a Disco. It is nothing great. MPG is pap, performance is pap and there is a big problem with the engine/ drivetrain, which is Fords number 1 warranty problem or some such, affecting 60% of vehicles.
They are not particulary big or feature laden.
Better off with a Subaru Forester or legacy

I'v sold my 03 Disco because when the new shape hits the roads it will probably kill the resale of the old ones and I just wanted a Freelander so I keep on driving the Landy badge. After about a year or so I hope to bye one of the new Disco's. But it sounds like the Freelander isn't a good idea.

Freelanders can be fine.
From the experiences friends have had I'd go for a diesel - unless you can afford to run V6.
The 1.8 petrol has had some problems with the head - often due to poor mtce and isn't that fast. The early diesel was reliable but slow whereas the TD4 is very good.
Go for it.

Found a Freelander thats OK with the wife so it must be OK with me. Its a two year old 1.8 petrol which I know some said leave alone. Had a word with the service manager at the LR dealer I'v got it from and he said the later ones are much better than the early ones. Pick it up Friday.
