The stereo has recently started to make a horrible loud, high pitched whine which is a pain in the arse, but is also seems to come and go randomly.

I presume this is common on these Harmon Kardon systems (as every other problem on these cars is common!), but does anyone know how to resolve it?

It's ignition noise getting into the stereo. Probably an earth connection gone bad somewhere.

I had a similar issue and traced it to the tweeters. Check out the wiring and you'll be able to solve the problem.

If it rises and falls in pitch with engine revs then as mentioned it may be earth related but may also be that the suppressor on the back of the alternator has failed. Quite cheap and easy to rep[lace.

Ponty, I have answered a similar complaint in the past, & will tell you about my experience. I had two range rovers; one was a 97 4.0. What yr./model are you having trouble with?
Anyway, I had this terrible, high-pitch whine--wouldn't go away. Turned out to be the entire speedometer-tachometer unit going bad. I have heard of others same appr. yr. model going out. The entire component (tachometer, speedometer, etc.) in one piece has to be replaced b/c can not be repaired or taken apart.
Sounds crazy, but you must consider it. THE SOUND WILL TRAVEL; IT DOESN'T SEEM LIKE IT IS COMING FROM THE SPEEDOMETER OR TACH AREA--IT SEEMS TO COME FROM THE SPEAKERS--BUT BELIEVE IT OR NOT, MY MECHANIC WAS RIGHT, I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT, BUT IT IS THE TACH-SPEEDO UNIT GOING BAD.
Hope not your problem, but you better have a good mechanic w/a good ear check it out.
