Series questions

Anyone got a suggestion for timing a 2A 2.25 petrol on unleaded? The book gives TDC (8:1 CR) but it runs like crap! Runs better at 3 - 6 degrees advanced, if a little hot. I've just fitted (correctly!) a Weber conversion, and it's using more fuel than it did with the old leaky Solex. Compression is even at about 125, which I think is about right for 8:1, and it sounds really sweet. Would be a shame to junk it, but it must be possible to attain average mpg at least up to normal series standards....
