I'm looking at buying a Discovery but can't decide between a V8 or TD5. I want auto and I've tested a TD5 but was disappointed by the performance and noise. Might try another one as a comparison....

If I go V8 I'd have to have a LPG conversion. Does this affect insurance much? Same question for TD5 and getting it stage 1 chipped.

What sort of MPG could I expect from both engines? I commute along A/B roads with few stop/starts.

Can i really throw a fly in the ointment and suggest a HS 2.8 TGV
www.prinsmaasdijk.nl/landroverengine/index.html
it has more bhp than the TD5 and more torque, i think than the V8
and none of the electrical hassles.

I went for a Td5, and I get high 20s to the gallon (over 500 miles to a tank). I decided not to go for a V8 LPG because of the range - a 70l tank will give you about 120 miles, which would p*ss me right off.
I'm going to go for a chip remap too, not sure which yet, although Van Aaken are about 10 minutes from home.

I have a V8 Auto. (for sale, too, unfortunatley) I love it. It has good poke but is not a sports car. It upset an Elise driver when I over took him at 120 on the way to Le Mans 2 years ago!

If I drive it, it does about 17 MPG, If the missus drives, it does 21 MPG.

If we were keeping it I'd get it LPG converted. It halves the cost of fuel with only a tiny performance drop. I'd also get an extra tank fitted. A friend has a original RR which he has gas converted with about 130 litres worth of tanks. On a recent trip, we did Silverstone to exmoor and back + 2 days off roading without having to fill up again.

Which is not bad. When I finish the kit car (one of the reasons for selling disco) Plan to get another LR and get it kitted out for serious off road.

A 130l tank would be useful, most Discoveries seem to have the 70l under floor conversion though.

I've got a TD5 with the JE stage 2 conversion on it ( a grand very well spent)

the standard td5 is a pain in the arse no torque below 2000 rpm then it all comes in at once.

with the stage 2 its much better, probably quicker than the v8 but the noise is nasty...

the noise of a v8 makes me smile.. the noise of the td5 makes me grumpy..

the wifes 3.9 gets about 18mpg and i've never had more than 25 from the td5, although i seem to be getting a little more in normal driving after the conversion.

I drove a V8 auto at the lr experience and it seemed a much nicer vehicle, more refined and less of a tractor..

I'd have bought a v8 is the option was there but they only do td5 in the disco commercial

lifes to short to worrk about 6-7 mpg

By a RR instead. I've just bought a 2001 Vogue for £20k. It is brill, averaging about 20mpg.

I am asking 10.5 for my 2000 Disco V8 ES, which probably has more toys

Looked at RR (wifey prefers) but I'd really like 7 seats. Also the RR only has a centre lap belt in the back and I want a 3 pointer....

70l = 15.5g which at 15mpg (worst case) should give a range of 232miles shouldn't it?

Economy is worse on LPG, I was told to count on around 10mpg (still works out at equivalent to over 20mpg, not bad for a V8 disco), so that makes minimum of 150 miles, nothing like the 120 i worked out i guess, always was rather crap at maths....

10mpg on LPG I was hoping for a bit more than that.

Might have to consider the TD5 again

Most people seem to get between 12 and 18 mpg out of a petrol V8, 10% increase in consumption is about right for LPG, so that goes to 10 to 16 mpg. Still not bad if you are only paying 39p a litre though

we manage 28-30 out of the td5, but i have to say that i preferred the 300tdi engine. i often find myself in too high a gear and nearly stall as the torque under 2000 reves is terrible.

The HS2.8 TGV has 133bhp with torque 277 lb ft @1400rpm,
economical, powerfull, deisel, stick in a big intercooler and.....well, need i say more?

"This 2.8 liter engine is the big brother of the 300 Tdi. It has many common parts as the 300Tdi, but there has been some major improvements, and the torque has jumped from 195 lbf ft @ 1,800 rpm, to a massive 277 lbf ft @ 1,400 rpm!

This is great news for those who have the Discovery and Range Rover automatics

The 3.9L V8 was 232 lbf ft @ 3,100 rpm, so you can see, the HS2.8L puts out more torque at less than half the rpm!

With the old 300 Tdi kits for Discos, the V8 ZF automatic had to be replaced with a 300 Tdi version as the torque was not high enough to change gear efficiently.

Now Britannica Restorations can offer you what you always wanted - a direct replacement, economical, durable, fuel efficient engine for your old V8's"
