I've been looking at a TD5 auto with a view to purchase but a couple of things concern me.

During the test drive it seemed to rev to 3000rpm before moving off. Is this normal or is the torque convertor on the way out?

There were two warning lights on - S and N(? I think) on the dash and when I put it in drive the 'D' flashed and so did the lights next to the gear shift. What do these mean? The battery was completely flat when I got to the garage and they had to jump start it. They said this was the reason!

S is for sport mode and M is manual when in low ratio.

I have no idea what N is.

Thanks.

It might have been 'M' not 'N' I can't remember. Any ideas why they were on (and flashing)? I tried selecting the 'mode' button on the gearbox but it didn't do anything.

Had a flat on my v8 auto last week. When I turned it on all lights lit up, but as soon as i engaged starter all the lights went off and there was a constant relay clicking. Jumped started it and took it for a 30 min blast and all was well

S for sport basically keeps the selected gear longer before changing, which is good for around town to stop too many changes.

When in low range, pressing the S button should light a M on the dash. This is manual mode and effectivley locks the gear so you have to change them manuallyy through 1, 2, 3.

Have a look at it when battery is charged. If they do not appear to work, use it as a negotiiating tool.
