Shaky steering
Discussion
Hi all, I have a TDi 200 Disco, well somebody has to drive them. Trouble is that if I go over a bump or uneven bit of road at anything over 40mph-ish the steering shakes and I sometiomes have to accelerate to stop it. At times this has been quite frightening. I have pumped the front tyres up to around 35psi and this helps. Other stuff I have done is changed all the shocks including the steering damper and also removed a couple of shims from the swivle housings to tighten the bearings. The steering box and linkage seems OK and I have replaced all the ball joints. None of it makes any difference. Anyone got any ideas short of attacking the car with a gas torch.

Yeah, I had that problem too, along with many, many others. On my 94 RR (surprisingly not my 97 RR), it turned out to be a shock absorber loose. I'm no mechanic, but under the hood (bonnet), where the shock absorbers are bolted. Check make sure not loose. Don't know how it made my RR shake so bad, but it did.
Hi, I had the same issue with my '98 V8 Disco.
It's done 150k miles now and to cure it I have had to invest in new H/D springs all round, new gas shocks [inc steering]and swap the wheels around [front to back]
I had had replacment shocks only 10k ago but it turns out they were cheap and nasty ones and dont actually do anything at all. The tyre issue suprised me though,
the front tyres had done 60k+ miles and were still good but it seems had worn with the "shaking" and would never run true on the front end. Fitting them to the rear really helped! I will be replacing them sone so it should be even better.
