Hi all

I'm determined to finally return to the Landrover fold - I think She who must be Obeyed has just about forgotten that time when I wiped out a Series 3 using a wooden fence. and a brick wall. and a jag.

I had decided to get another Series, preferably tax exempt, but the comment has been made that it would be cheaper to pay the tax and run a defender or disco

So can anyone give me a few guidelines on the fuel consumption of the various engines - 2 and a qtr petrol/ diesel and v8 please? I'll probably go for an LPG conversion at some stage if I go petrol.

And I prefer the character of the Series/defender models.

Thanks all

Dave

You know it makes sense

Defender 90 50th Anniversary 4.0 V8 Auto about 16mpg if driven fairly briskly on a mainly hilly commute to work.

Better fuel consumption affected my choice too. What I really wanted was a '60s LWB station wagon, but you would be lucky to get more than 18-20mpg out of the 2.6 or 2.25 petrol ones, and a V8 conversion does 12-15mpg. I bought an early '90s 200TDi 110 CSW instead, which does 30mpg, so the maths are inescapable. On 6,000 miles a year I save about £500, so £165 on road tax is worthwhile. A 200TDi costs more to buy in the first place of course, but depreciation is almost nil.

1960 S2 88in 2.25 Diesel,
O/D, 7.50-tyres, electric fan, FWH, always pre-heated engine starts,
consumes 10...12 litres per 100km; that'll be 28...23 mpg
