Mini John Cooper, real or rep
Discussion
Hi,
My Dad has a Mini John Cooper in the shed, H reg, red with white John Cooper autographed stripes and autographed chrome 3-spoke steering wheel.
How do we know if this is a real John Cooper or a Rep ?
Also what is the difference between a standard Mini Cooper and a John Cooper ?
What is it worth, say average condition, no rust, good paint and alloys with 36k miles.
Thanks.

Looks like it could be a real RSP, although a couple of the details are wrong although things like the wheels and dashboard are easily changed. The chassis number should contain BAD if its a genuine RSP Cooper.
Colour coded arches are correct, but the mirrors should be body colour, and the wheels are from a later model as they are a different shade of silver and the holes for the nuts should be in-line with the spokes (the rear looks to be different again?).
The dash and clocks are from a mid 90's car.
The steering wheel is an aftermarket item which was made by Mota-Lita for John Cooper Garages.

Hi thanks for the reply, your right about the alloy, its a spare as there was a puncture as far as i can remember the holes line up with the spokes on the others.
Chassis number does contain BAD and also the engine is the right one again verified by the engine code I found on another site.
Also iv read that EVERY RSP has a sunroof, this doesn't.
Im confused ?
Also wheredo I find chassis number stamped on the car ?

Chassis plate is on the inner wing just in front of the washer bottle, and the number is stamped into the channel under the scuttle at the back of the engine bay.
I thought they all had sunroofs, I know they were a dealer fit option on the mainstream coopers that followed, but I'm not 100% on the RSP, I did think they were factory fit but I could be wrong.

I had one of those back in the day. H977 FLC if its still about.
Recall mine having a sunroof and smart alloy window winders. Sounded really nice with a LCB and fruity backbox.
I'd be interested in what they are worth now also. I sold mine after a year for £50 less than I paid. Sometime in 1996 I think around £3,600.

Sunroof as standard a definite on the rsp. I bought one new in 89 and still have the brochure and spec sheet. Also a later dash has been added, the steering wheel is not the original fitment and the stereo was mounted on the passenger side so this one looks like an attempt at a copy but with quite a few mods, like the wood dash and the non body coloured mirrors.
