I have a number of things to do to the engine soon - cam, timing, head, clutch. My question is what order should I do them in? I'm figuring that I should do the clutch last to avoid any contamination. Guess that the other 3 are simple - cam, timing then head?

Seem to remember its
Brakes
Suspension
Tyres
Head
Carb
exhaust
cam
seating should be in there somewhere and exhaust/carb may be swopped over

I recon you should get ur head done first then change ur cam and then you can get it all timed up.
What can you contaminate changing ur clutch?

What cam and head spec are you going for? I would try to do the head and cam at the same time as you need to check the comp.ratio with the engine in bits if you can and the ratio you decide on will, to some extent be decided by the cam you choose.
If the engine is down, remember to have the block deck planed to bring the piston crowns right to the top of the bores. Then calculate the comp.ratio (give me a shout if you get stuck with this) and this will give you the ideal combustion chamber volume.
Time the cam in either with a vernier cam sprocket or offset woodruff keys. It's not too difficult, all you need is a dial gauge and an engine protractor.
Distributor timing is another matter. If increasing the c.r you may need more mechanical advance on the dizzy. Either go to an Aldon Red (or Aldon Yellow if it's a more mild engine). For really hot engines, like over 100 bhp, you may need to get a specially re-curved dizzy. Again Aldon will do this.
Good luck with this. I hope this helps.
