I'm starting reassembly of my mk 1 and having been bitten by a faulty refurbish rack in the past I was looking to see what was available. A bit of googling has revealed that mk1 steering racks are no longer available, so how would I check for play in the 2 racks I have to choose from, and is it possible to refurbish them?

I've also read about swapping to a mk2 rack but there is confusing info about needing new steering arms and maybe even hubs. The hubs I intend to use came with a set of s discs I bought a few years ago. Could anyone clarify what parts are needed for fitting a mk2 rack?

Thanks

for an easy life, fit a mk2 rack and mk2 arms (which have the little 'ears' where the track rod go - mk1 arms do not)

mk1 racks are hard to find, possible to recon, but you have to make all the parts.

the mk2 rack has a little less lock than the mk one and the arms ensure that the ackerman is more correct - particually if your running discs / wider wheels.
