Am i right in saying,,,

probably yes
in that the carb and dizzy versions are more suited to a older home mechanic and do not have as many issues come mot time.
however, the spi's are a nice thing to learn the basics of injection on as they are very simple and its easy to work through faults with them (not that much goes wrong). its also possible to buy programmable ecus that will run allow the use to fiddle more (so is a fairly cheap way into learning about programming etc)
the mpis are crap, complicated, expensive parts etc etc. not really worth bothering with unless you really want one of the last minis.
there is a lot more knowledge and stuff avalible for home ecu mapping etc and it is certainly the way forwards.

A 1275 before around 1992 - 1993 will be carb and dizzy.
After 1993 most are SPI.
There seem to be a few that don't conform to this rule, probably because BL had some carbs still and ran out of injection parts on a Friday, , or someone has converted from SPI to carb.
The 1275 has more power than the 998 and is the one I'd go for, infact, I did,
People seem to say that models from the 80s have some of the best qualities, as in, less likely to rust. The later cars are apparently more prone to rust as the metal/coatings were different or something.
I've got a 1993 Italian Job which has done 50k miles, and hasn't done too badly rust wise, its had some parts previously replaced, but then any mini will have.

Snap, I have a red one. I have heard also that the 90s models rust more, but I think as long as you keep an eye on it you should be fine.
Mines got some patches welded in by a PO, and new sills but otherwise sound!
mines blue, Mines got some patches welded in by a PO, and new sills but otherwise sound!
Mines already had new sills, and patches elsewhere, and supposedly a new front end.
I've got a hole in the rear companion box, in the usual place, sealed up with some bits of aluminium and rivets and sealant at the moment, but I'll have it welded at some point.
Also need a new rear boot floor lip/rear valance thing, the lips gone all rusty and got a hole in one bit patched up with some filler at the moment as a temp fix.
