remote gearbox
Discussion
There is a 1275 gt gearbox on ebay which I am thinking of buying for my
cooper as it has the same ratios as the "s" box. however will the "s" remote
fit the "gt" box. I heard somewhere that there is a "sandwich" between box and remote which I dont have and which may be difficult to source. Any ideas anyone?

...... a lot will depend upon what year car the gearbox came from, and what year your car is! There are various differences which will create problems, other than the "remote" issue, such as output shafts, primary gears etc. In other words, what year Cooper is it, and what year did the gearbox come from??cooper as it has the same ratios as the "s" box. however will the "s" remote

only the 1100/1300 have the sandwitch rubber plate.
the gearcase and remote differ from a mini in that the bolts on a 1100/1300 go sideways, the mini ones go vertically.
you can use the 1100/1300 set up in a mini, but from memory the remote is longer and you have to move the bracket at the back

Thanks for both replies. It comes from 1973 1300gt. dont know if that would match
the cooper but was possibly changing the engine anyway. What if any 1275 motor would match?. As the floor is out of the car at the moment the bracket would not
be a problem. thanks again.
Guru is correct in what he says regarding the length of the remote housing, and it is possible to fit the complete unit to your Cooper. The output shaft joints may be a rubber cross on the 1300GT, and therefore the shafts from the diff would need changing, assuming that is, you are talking about a later Cooper.the cooper but was possibly changing the engine anyway. I think you need to tell us exactly what you are trying to achieve, because you could create a major problem for yourself unnecessarily!!
Well its a long story. Back in August I started restoring a mk1. auto hydrolastic
850 mini. I had just finished the shell in early December when I heard of a mk1
cooper rolling shell going cheaply at the same time I was offered good money for
the mk1 shell which was in primer and finished so ended up with the cooper, which
is undergoing restoration at the moment. I would like to get as close to a mk1
cooper s, as possible. cant afford genuine cooper s stuff so looking for alternatives. As i have not even decided on engine etc. have a clean canvas,
as it were.

sounds like a nice project, are you leaving it on hydro as well?
what year is the cooper?
the 1300gt engine will go in, but it would depend on your budget if your going to swop the gearbox to make a mini set up (its what i would do)
you will probably need to sabve your money for the trim, depending on the colour thats where the money will be!

Its a 1963 dry cooper (so at least no problems with the hydrolastic). I dont know
whether that would have been a 997 or 998. It was red and I have all the original
doors boot and bonnet. The rear subframe looks nearly new with new swingarms and
the cooper spacer drum brakes, but they replaced the subframe and left the boot
floor and main floor as rusty as hell but that seems to be the only structural
problems. doing the floor one side at a time at the moment. I have the cooper
remote do you know what gearbox housing that would fit? as I then may not buy
the gt box but just get the "S" ratios put in another casing, what do you think?
