Currently im doing an evening class in welding at a local college, thoroughly enjoying it tho most of the time its just welding scrap bits of steel together so our lecturer has said we can do any little projects we fancy.

So this got me thinking of converting a left hand saloon tank to a right hand one.

Anybody got any experience/pics of doing this??

Well aware of the precautions i'll need to take before attacking a tank with the grinder/MIG/TIG welder......

It's not easy as the tank really is handed and not just by the filler neck. The outside, i.e. the LH side, of the tank is compound curvature whilst the inside is flat. I've heard it can be done, but that the tank is then hard to fit and never looks right when fitted.
A good exercise in welding though.
Good luck with it.

If my old brain cells are feeding me properly, I think some Mini-Coopers were fitted with twin tanks? You might find an opposite one if you're lucky. At least they don't rust!

You can get them new but is much more fun to try and make your own.

yep you can get them new but its about 300 quid just for the tank.

being an Aberdonian id much rather make it myself....

anyway picked up a couple second hand tanks so just need to flush them out thoroughly now.

you can use the early lh 5 gallon tanks to make a rh tank, but as cooperman says, they never look right as there is a fair bit of modding arounf the back to get them to fit around the wheel arch. the only car ive ever seen one fitted to looked rubbish as both caps sat at different angles.

still, lh tanks are cheap enough to mess around with, but {health and saftey on} make sure you are confident that the tank is cleaned out correctly and your welding is up to standard {health and saftey off}
