My coolant's gone a disgusting rusty brown colour. When I checked it today there were also bubbles in the header tank.

It seems to do this all the time now. It isn't losing any water (although it occasionally chucks it out of the overflow, which I haven't got to the bottom of) and it isn't overheating.

It needs more anti-freeze to water than it currently has, but I can't see that causing this.

So what is it, and should I be worried?

ETA: should have said, I the coolant has been changed twice within the last three months.

If it start to rust the water will always be brown. Not to much to worry about in most cases. The bubles and water out of the over flow tank is. That noramly means head gaskit problems. The gas from the piston is forcing it's way in to the water ways. The bubles is the gas and if you get a lot the volume of gas and water means it will over flow. Doing a presser test to check on each piston should show if that right or not. Even if it is the head gaskit it not to big a job.

Try smelling the water. If it smells 'exhaust-ish' it may be the head gasket. If not, then flush, put in the anti-freeze mixture, warm it up, then after carefully removing the cap, see if it is 'bubbling'. If it is, it is probably the HG. It might be a good time to change the HG anyway as it's an easy job and will give you peace of mind.
If it's a 1275, fit a BK450 head gasket.
