Picked this up yesterday!

It's been in dry storage since a resto in the early 90s. Polished up a treat though.

Needs all the runny and bendy bits replacing but the shell is in fine fettle so I'll be doing that over the coming few weeks. And most importantly, needs a set of go-faster GT stripes.

Need to decide whether to bother T&T'ing this year and exposing it to the winter or wait til next spring. If I get it running and stopping I'll probably not be able to wait...

Very nice!

What wheels are they? I thought GTs were on 12" steels as standard?

They are 5x12 KN Meteors and its got 155 Goodyear Grand Prix S tyres which have plenty of tread but I'm afraid they'll have to be replaced after standing for so long.

I doubt these ones would be a 'major contribution to road safety'!!

Can't say that I've seen 155x12s listed anywhere which is a shame as they are a very good fit on those 5 inch wheels.

When I bought my gt back in 1998 it was in 155 x12s. Perhaps garages saw them as the nearest size to the metrics that were taken off? I replaced them with the same size pirelli p2000 as they were cheap, but the car drove far better on the 165 yokos that replaced those.

I assume that it was 5"x12" wheels?

155/70/12's? Size never designed for Mini's, designed for heavier cars (Viva's etc) and has very compliant sidewalls - ride and handling would have been rubbish anyway - so file them in the skip. If you keep the 12's (Nice wheels and different from ubiquitous Minilights) Replace with 165/60/12's. Fit on same rim width. Falkens/Yoko's - take your pick.

It's a 1275GT - I'd be sticking revolutions on it along with the door/side graphics - they just look so right on GT's.

Nice find BTW.

Spellink etc.

Good advice - there must be a reason as to why you don't see 155s available at MiniSport, Moss, Minispeed etc.

I've a bit of a soft spot for the Dunlop D1 alloys (a previous Clubby I owned had them), but there are more pressing thngs to do to it before a wheel change, and like you say, the ones on it are a bit different than the usual Minilite lookalikes - which is what having a Clubby is all about isn't it? A set of side stripes are definitely on the shopping list though...

A late gt should have metric wheels on, and it was quite common at the time to replace them with aftermarket 12s when the metrics wore out (later gt's have the 8.4 discs).
So the alloys would have been a period mod. Mine has 12 alleycats on for the same reason.

Can't be many sets of those metric wheels around now. And even if you stumbled across a set you'd be hard pushed to find rubber for them. I'm happy keeping these and putting the 165/70s on.

That's still a while away as after my first weekend working on the car it has the classic Mini water leak in the head bypass hose, there's no charge reaching the solenoid (the battery is new) and the clutch is solid. I think it will be the spring before it gets to stretch its legs...

Lovely little car. Same colour as my one back in 1990, still fancy getting another one.

Cheers guys. Getting my hands on an old car to potter with has been a long time coming. I've got three daughters and I deserve some quality shed-time.

Hopefully should be at the Malvern Mini Show at the weekend to source some GT go-faster stripes. The colour is a great 70s colour - Metallic Denim - flaretastic!

You deserve a long service medal - not a 1275GT hehe

Keep this thread updated - might have a potter over to Malvern myself.

A GT will do me just fine...I loves me Minis, I does. Just working on it at the weekend made me feel 17 again...Remember when going out on a Friday night when you and your mates actually used to argue about whose turn it was to drive rather than get ratted. 'It's not fair, you drove last week!'

I'll try and keep the thread going with progress over the hopefully not too many months getting it back on the road - with some more pics along the way.
