Erratic Rev Counter

My rev counter (original 90's rover) has started playing up, every so often itll flicker and die off then go back to normal. The engine doesnt seem to be affected at all.

My guess is probably a loose connection or something internal on the rev counter. But can it be related to something else, such as a coil or electronic ignition fault?

As daft as it sounds but do your wipers self park?If not this maybe causing your problems with your rev counter,as the ignition live comes from the park switch on the wiper motor.Disconnect the plug on the wiper motor and see what happens,also check the wires on your coil to see if any are loose as the other feed to the rev counter comes from here.
