possibly a stupid dashpot question

better to ask rather than blindly go forward.....

the dashpot on my 998cc G reg mini needs some more oil in it... so i've gone and bought some 3-in-1 from my local motorist shop. all good so far.

the question i have is.... when unscrewing the top of the dashpot i can see the smaller ring inside which i believe should have oil to the top - but is that just to the top of the smaller inner chamber or the whole thing?

i did say it could be a silly question. i'm thinking its just the inner chamber but would like the re-assurance.

if you over fill it the excess will escape on its own, you cannot do any damage.

if you fill to the level of the inner ring it will be right

Engine oil should do the job just as well. Google SU carbs and see if you can find a cross sectional picture - this should explain how it all works and make more sense of the whole thing.

right i've found a side on diagram of the dash pot....
looks to me like i was right and its just the inner chamber that needs the oil in it.

can someone confirm this for me.
