It would normally go in the centre(ish) of the grill mounted on the brakets which the oooler suppliers include with the kit. You have to flatten the front panel locally to allow for the cooler to sit in place.
If you have an MPI it's a different matter entirely. On non-MPI later cars the engine has been moved frorward and the starter has a built-in solenoid which means the cooler has to sit further forward. This means the grille has to be spacered about 1/2" forward on the front panel.

any idea if i can get the brackets on their own? i bought a cooler on its own, without anything else (brackets, hoses etc)they company i got the cooler off doesn't do brackets.
Im supercharging the engine and using a carb. so no MPi or Spi.

It's easy to make your own brackets. All you need is a long strip of 16 swg steel, say 1.5" wide. You make up two strips to go from the lower lip of the front panel up to the front panel 'ledge', turn the strip 90 degrees, cut to length to suit. Flatten the front panel along the length of the cooler, bolt the strip at the bottom onto the front valance lower lip and drill and bolt through the panel and brackets to suit the cooler mounting holes. Then just bolt right through. Use 1/4" UNF nuts & bolts.
