Early Mk 1 clutch problems include bent operating arm, incorret clutch stop-bolt setting (different for early pre diaphragm clutch car), worn clevis pins (bottom and/or top), incorrect overthrow stop setting.

All the things listed by Cooperman, and one to think about if high millage/ lots of town use, is worn thrust washers allowing the crank to move when the clutch is depressed. Not common ,but I have seen this twice.

I agree with 'plank'. I had a Cooper 'S' in last year which had cluth engagement problems and it turned out to be 0.040" crank end float resultimng in a scrap crank and considerable machining to the block plus sourcing +0.030" thrust washers.
By the way, I now have a clutch problem with my Innocenti which i'm trying to isolate. Does anyone know what the stroke of a pre-Verto clutch slave cylinder should be? I measured mine at 0.3" whilst my Cooper 'S' seems to measure 0.050". That's measured after taking all the slack out of the linkage and just measuring the linear stroke at the operating push rod.

a mate of mine had this problem and after a lot of messing discovered that that the n.o.s clutch master he had bought of ebay was the wrong bore size - the result was the piston in the slave cylinder didnt move as far as it should when the pedal was pressed.

looking further into it, it would appear that a 'good trick' of people who sell such things is to buy austin 1100 clutch masters (which are the wrong bore), remove the operating rod (which is the wrong length) and fit a mini operating rod - voila, a n.o.s grey coloured master cylinder thats worth 75 quid instead of a tenner......

it took a lot of finding - he even had the motor out because he though it was a flywheel/clutch/crank problem.

Hi Rich,
I thought you were on holiday this week!
The master cylinder bore did occur to me, but both slave & master cylinders were as fitted to this car when I acquired it and it was working last time it was used, about 12 months ago. You colleague sent me a new slave which arrived this morning (that's Mini Spares North's excellent mail order service) and I'll fit and bleed that. If that's no good I'll call you and order a new master.
