A son of a friend is looking to get a Mini. What is the best / cheapest insurance company. He is 18 years old living in the Sunderland area. Any help much appreciated. Cheers. BH

I dont know if it will help, but after my 17 year old son passed his test, his Insurance went up by a grand???????????

I spent days searching online and making fone calls. After a while went back online and tried a well known company with blue and yellow logo recently renamed and advertised loads on the TV.(can i quote names?) their online quote was nearly 800 quid cheaper than their fone quote, so i thought "lets give it a go" filled in the form, bent the plastic and hey presto two days later, paperwork arrived with the certificate.

£1800 quid for a seventeen year old boy, only just passed his test etc etc. Now i know that seems steep, but it was a grand better than the next least expensive quote. Two weeks later he did the pass plus and got a 160 quid refund!!! next step is RoSpa test for even more discount.

What happened to the days when you could insure a mini for fifty quid and then it went DOWN when you passed you test.

I would also like to hear from others with a similar experience. Not trying to steal the thread but it might be of interest to a lot of other guys struggling to find good value young driver insurance.

£1800 for a mini? Holy mother of god!!!!!

I passed my test "a while ago" and whilst my mate was stung £1600 on a 1.6 escort van, my Morris Minor was £400.

Compare the market et al are good.

Colonade (spelling? ) are pretty good. I don't know if the policy was worth anything, but it was cheap as hell. Then as soon as possible, on to Flux with minis.

Sadly, Flux aren't what they used to be and my full race "shouldn't be allowed on the road" mini was £270 odd. Using some magic online comparison nonsense, I got it down to £80! Without the mods, they would have been paying me!

Footman James were cheap as well, but that may have been a 21+ job.

Best of luck and keep trying. Don't rule out limited milage policies as they are a good move.

£1800 is totally barking. Utterly mental and unjustifiable.

Presumably the £1800 is fully comp. My neighbour's son is just 17 and his 3rd party on a Citroen Saxo 1.6 is just under £1000. I don't know which company, but I an find out if you want.

Bought my son a mini to learn in, insurance was £800 Third Party, didn't go down much when he passed. That was with LV.

He is now 20, and we have just insured a MPI Cooper for £400 fully comp with HIC.
