Yo all, just needed some advice really.

After another mini after mine was written off frown It was a standard 1275, pretty zippy sort of thing. Anyway, went to test drive an Austin mini with a 1300 MG head and god knows what else because theres no history.

It was quick, very quick for a mini. Would love to put it on a dyno. Thing is I'm worried about parts and reliabilty on something like that. Will standard service parts from minispares and A series engines fit on this MG engine? Its not a modern engine, has the starter solenoid on the offside near wing. I love the car but part of me thinks it will be financial suicide frown

Anyone got any experience of these things?

Parts are no problem and not to much money (I take it that this is an MG metro engine so is almost the same as a mini). Get the car checked out by some one how knows and you should be ok. No rust is a good strating point as if you cant do the work your self this can cost a lot to put right.

I've got a clubman estate with a MG Metro 1275cc engine bored out to 1293cc and had no problems with parts at all. I would say go for it!

The MG 1300 is only an older 1275. Don't worry. I had one in a Mini 30 years ago!

  • No History.
Not really the biggest thing tbh if the price is right and mechanically it all stacks up it wont make the world of difference.

  • Reliability
As reliable as your previous mini... although you don't know the service history nor what possibly the true mileage of the car is so things maybe on the edge of their life and you wont find out till it goes bang... or stutter stutter..... bang

  • financial suicide
Well this is again no different to your last mini other than you likely wont spend as much as you would buying a more reliable euro box in totality?

If you can get over being squashed like a bug if you hit anything i'd go for it. I stopped driving minis as i drove to many miles and read to many minor crashes which turned the mini into a pancake (but again no worse than any other classic)

Thanks for the replies.

Can you believe it, I got my insurance sorted on the thing and everything, went to get the car and someone had got there before me frown

@CooperS, aye I know how much they fold up in a crash, although mine took the brunt pretty well given the circumstances.

Meant to say, been looking for a new car for a fortnight now and getting nowhere. If anyones seen any for around £1500, must be a 1275 with MOT and tax, I'm having no luck on the usual sites. frown

Get it and be careful with it, watch it and maintain it. smile

Should be fine.

It's only when you neglect an old engine due to ignorance or drive a sprint engine on the road for too long that things wear/fall to bits.

My 66 is about to have a full race 1430 installed. Before that it's had a whole series of engines, which were pretty reliable.

Go for it. Otherwise, get a Mondeo TDCi, pay up and shut up. wink

Blimey what the hells happened to mini values! Gone up loads since I bought mine last year.

Close to giving up and getting something "normal" frown Only so many times I can use the bus before going insane.
