looking for opinions......

My 1989 998cc is annoying me! its got an unpredictable idle speed (sometimes 1000 other times 1200) which is fine as its only pretty minor but when i come to a stand still the revs sometimes stay up around the 1600 / 1800 mark.

now if the revs are sitting at 1600 and i blip the throttle it settles back at 1000-1200.....so.....

i was thinking that it might be the accelerator cable sticking in these windy wet conditions.

what are your first thoughts???

Yes, they an do nthat bsometimes.
It can be the needle in the not entered and preventing the piston from falling right back when you are at idle.
It could be that the throttle spring(s) are not strong enough or, as you say, a sticking cable or linkage.
Check all these out.

Could it be something to do with the level of the oil in the dashpot? or is that something else?

The oil level in the dash pot would probably not effect the idle in that way. Low levels more effect runung on the move. It's always worth checking as it is easy to do.
