Ok so, can you guys throw me some ideas on why my ignition light would come on periodically whilst driving? speed, weather conditions, engine heat and oil level don't seem to make any difference and the light is combined with a minimal whining noise? Any clues?

Sounds like a failing alternator. Might be worth checking the output with a multi-meter.

It could be a faulty/loose connection. Also check that your fan belt is adjusted so that it is taught.

thanks for that you guys, i think there may have been a previous problem with the alternator so that's worth investigating, also the the fan belt was recently replaced so again I'll look into that! Ta for the help!

Sounds like alternator on its way out here too.

It'll be a 17ACR or similar .... you can get a recon exchange unit for about £50-£60.

But before shelling out check the wiring to alternator in good order and, as you say, the fanbelt.

I know this might sound a bit daft, but what should the reading be on the multi meter if the alternator is fine....? If this is really obvious then I apologise in advance!

12v when you first put the meter on the battery
10v as you start the engine
and straight back up to 14v when its started and running
