I would say the Hif44 was a good way to go. Taking it that the rest is almost standerd. If you have the money to get new what you ask for is what you get. Second hand is a bit harder as the carb may be worn out. If you have a look on ebay at the pics of the diffrent SU carbs you should start to see the diffrances. If you go to www.burlen.co.uk they ar SU carbs and do recon on carbs etc. May be worth a look. There are also a number of books that will give you all the diffrances and how to recon the carb your self.

As much as possible, you want to keep the power up and not be mucking about with overly old crap. Most HIF44 carbs are in good order (ish) I can't say I've had one with spindle slop.

An HS2 and and HS4 are both too small. A HIF38 is also too small. The one you want has a 1/3/4 bore and 4 mounting studs. The BDL needle is for an MG metro, which is a tiny bit too lean higher up for the engine. If you fit a BDK to an MG engine, it works a lot better. The BDL works with an MG/Auto (big inlet valve) head on a normal 1275 cam, rather than an MG cam.

Type HIF44 into ebay and you'll be away. Do you need the manifold as well? You could probably pick a cast iron manifold up cheap. I wouldn't bother with any fancy ones.

An HS6 would also work, although the HIF44 would probably be a better bet.
