Hi there,
here is my rebuild of My 1980 Clubman 1275GT Mini
here is what it looked like before the rebuild

Since then have removed the engine that was in it and replaced it with the engine out of a 1987 Austin Metro mayfair. this is the engine before reconditioning

Since then i have fully rebuilt this engine, started by disassembling and inspecting everything, decided to rebore the block to .30" and have it acid dipped. After that i brought some Mehle pistons to go with new rebore.

this photo is after i painted the block with VHT engine enamel and fitted the new pistons, as you will notice later on also replaced frost plugs and oil bungs. You will also notice that i have replaced the oil pump and water pump

I also had the head crack tested and planed, aswell as $500 worth of other work (bronze valve guides, unleaded seats) also spent many hours grinding head to david vizard spec's (bare in mind it was my first go at all this)
as you will also notice i have respayed the head with 1000 degree thermal paint.

Have had the cam that came with the metro engine reground by kelford cams with a fast road grind

here is a photo with the head now on the block

after this i have rebuilt the gearbox and differential replacing all bearings and seals aswell as new baulk rings. Also have replaced factory differential with a minisport crosspin diff

Here is a photo with my 1.5 ratio roller rockers showing

i now have the engine complete have just gone and spent alot of money on some nice ignition components

just waiting for the mini to get back from the painters and will be ready to put the engine in.

Update 08/09
its painted!! about time lol.. just gotta wait till they put the glass back in it etc then pick it up friday

Have recieved mini back from painter! at long last smile

have removed the drive shafts and replaced the CV's also waiting for another box of parts from UK
Getting new inner hubs, negative camber kit + adjustable tie rods and new poly bump stops and suspention bushes aswell as some new rack boots cos they poked too.
here are some photos

4 Pot Metro calipers all rebuilt with new pistons and seals smile and new vented discs

New CV's, stripped down the wiper motor cleaned and regreased internals and respray.

new 70amp alternator .. looking good...

Got new tires for my freshly painted rims, Falken 165/60R12 ZIEX ZE912's

here is a list of all the performance parts on this engine.

Roller-master double row vernier timing chain

Very nice work! What does a +30 overbore make the engine size? 1330?

It looks lovely, nothing better than a freshly restored Mini! Glad to see you kept it in it's orginal BL Brown colour too!

My best mates mum had a Clubman in the same colour when we were kids. I'll never forget the 'Mini' smell!

I really fancy one of my own.

I'm a big fan of these clubby's, in fact a big mini fan full stop.

Must say I'm not sold on the gold stripe BUT it does look bloody good. Well done on doing a clubby and not a normal Min. Look forward to some pictures of it all complete.

Looks fantastic in period colours, really nice job. I think I would have kept the clutch and flywheel from the original A series rather than the heavier Verto assembly in the A+ though.

Thanks for your comments biggrin
i kept it verto as its a metro engine and if i changed the flywheel and everything over would have had to dynamic balance it.
anyway verto is better isnt it?

Hi smile can only agree to the above comments smile very nice job, I like the crome valve cover, fits perfect with the age of the car, will you fit a brake servo? or run it, as is?
good luck with the start up smile that is a BIG moment, when engine kicks into life, after such a big rebuilt.

A friend of mine, has just found, a very early Clubman, with all the rare bits inplace, hydro suspension - black covers on the rubber seal on sill (same as Cooper S MK III) - vinyl on rearbins, same colour as enterior - Black vinyl on A posts - etc.
The car is from Sweden, so it has electric screen washer, rear seatbelts, generator - and steering columm lock, its so early, so it has a MK II boot handle.

Looks nice. Is that a swan neck manifold, or a very short one?

1310, with a fast road cam and verto clutch and non close gears.

Any idea what timing the cam is. Fast road, I'm assuming something like a piper 270 or a kent 276. I'd say you're looking at about 85 flywheel horsepower. Bear in mind that the MG metro (72hp) had a 252/268 cam, which is hotter than a gran-cam.

It depends on your compression ratio as well. I'd want to go around the 10.5:1 mark on 95 octane fuel.

What you will find critical is what final drive to use. As a tip, I was running a 3.44 on a very similar engine on 19.5" diameter tyres (10") and first gear of an A+_box was pretty useless. If I had to use a non CR box, I'd go for a 3.2 to get a useable first. Although a 3.7 with special tuning ratios is the real deal.

I think you'll find 38mm chokes will do the job.
