I didn't think there was an '89 Cooper. I thought that the Cooper only re-started in 1990. A 1990 Cooper would have a 12G940 head casting, as with all late 1275 cars. If a 1989 Cooper with a 1275 engine was marketed, then it will have a 12G940 head casting stamped as such with 33.5 MM inlet valves and 29 mm exhausts.
A 998 of 1989 would have a CAM6812 head casting according to my 1998 IPC, but I don't know what numbers would actually be stamped on the head casting.

I would agree with you Peter, that was why I wrote [quote] ...are you suggesting it may be a 1989 Cooper?I believe there may be some John Cooper conversions of that era though?

It would be nice if it is a '69. I always thought that the Mk 2 998 Cooper was one of the smoothest Minis in terms of road-driving.
Yes indeed, the Cooper (non S) is still an under-rated car I reckon, in fact the mk2 in general. I loved mine, but I guess that was a long time ago!I'm not 100% sure but from what I'v found out so far I think its a Mini that was converted in early 89 by John Cooper I have spoken to Tony Franks who worked for John Cooper at this time and he said it was very likly. The decals on the car indicate its a 30th aniversary from John Cooper Garages but that doesn't mean a thing. It also has twin carbs janspeed manifold and exhaust. The engine number is 99HE20106168 and the head number is CAM4810. I'v loads of paperwork for the car including the original sales receipt showing the owner traded in her Mini Mayfair for a Mini Cooper. The previous owner had it valued by the British Mini Club and they stated it is a John Cooper works special. I know that alot of this info can be made up but I'v yet to find anyone who can 100% confirm what Mini I have.
From the middle 80s John Cooper was supplying kits as described above to Japan.
Coopers also converted some cars for the home market. These were mainly based on the Racing Green and The Red Hot. I say mainly because I have seen a few others including a Rose.
These cars were 998 and featured revised exhaust and manifold, Twin Su carbs and a modified cylinder head. Other options (diff etc) could be specified.
As far as ID is concerned, there should be an ID plate on the crossmember by the drivers door. Cylinder heads were normally painted blue. I'm not sure if they were numbered, but they came from Janspeed.
