Part no. C-AEG 529 marked AEG 530 is a spider 649.
The prefix STR was never used by BL as far as I know.

I've never seen an 'STR' prefix to a cam number, although the 530 might indicate a 649 profile. Try measuring the lift. Guru1071 will be along to tell us what max lift on a 649 is, I'm sure, or I can look it up this evening.

The STR 930 is a 649, and is used in miglias. Have a search on the kent website, it has a 530 listed and will give you all the details.

Ok, has anyone run one of these for the road? My 66 (not an everyday car, not used in heavy traffic) with the N/A 1380 is looking at getting one of these just for the hell of it. I was wondering if I could pull a 3.44 FD with a 2.54 first gear or whether it would be better off sticking with the 3.7. The thing is otherwise all singing all dancing. (running an 11:1 CR), I like the idea of having a cammy car before I go back to supercharged pleasure. (10psi running a 266 style supercharger cam with more exhaust duration/lift) 264/288. I've lined myself up with a set of 1.5 su's as well.

I tried the old 544, which is much milder than the 649, with a 3.44 diff and the s/c c/r ratio box. 1st was much too high and I switched immediately to a 3.9. With a 649 and the high 1st you get with the s/c box the lowest that would have a chance of pulling away easily is a 3.9 and maybe a 4.1 would be better. Still, if you are going 649 it is obvious that you will be using 7000 rpm, so that would be no problem. I once put a 649 into a 1071 race engine with a 4.1 and 1.5 rockers. It was great on tarmac stages, but for gravel or hilly bits it was a bit too cammy and I changed it for a 286 which was much better as an overall cam.

i run billet 649s in my road and race cars, both 1071's.

the racer is a 3.9, sc box, with a weber.

the road is 3.7, cr box with twin h4's.

the 649 is a little too much on the road car, in that it does get a bit of stand off on the carbs round town, and you have to hold it in 2nd to keep the revs up as its not really happy below 2500. it will pull past 8 in every gear though. it was better when i ran it with a 3.9, but painfull on longer journeys. round town there is always a faint smell of petrol as i dont run filters, just the long ram pipes, these make a massive differance to the way it pulls. i think that should the engine ever go pop i would drop down to a 544, just to get a bit more tractability out of it.

the racer on the other hand really needs a 4.2 in it, just to make it rev harder, the 3.9 is too high and holds it back. its also getting very worn, ive turned the pinion round three times so far (theres always a side less worn!) and its really starting to scream!

thats a job for winter.

the 649 is one of those cams thats discounted by many people as its 'old' and doesnt follow the easy to remember path of 266,276,286 and so on, but its always had good results for me and i really like it.

end of the day, its only 50 odd quid to try a regrind, 130 odd quid to try a billit - not expensive
