Hi all a very long time no post - now seeking advice... I have a bodily excellent but mechanically tired '80 City under resto & mods and went to pick up my mum's car from her fave back street garage - under tons of debris at the back spotted a familiar shape... turned out to be a frighteningly decrepit P reg Mini Equinox MOT fail - scary amounts of rust but 21K on and £250 later its mine - was only after the ½ leather interior but hey bonus bits such as 1275spi lump, wooden dash and minilites are hard to turn down - now back to the point - and there's no saving the equinox - the corrosion is the worst I've ever seen (sills inner & outer, valance, wings, a panels, doors, front floorpan all goners)
Has anyone retro converted a carb 998 to injection before - I'm at the first stages of considering things at the mo - and to save a post already sussed that front subframe is different - my main concern is that mechanics are no problem but I'm an electrical moron - would anyone happen to know where I could lay my hands on a decent colour wiring diagram?????????? Any advice warmly welcomed - but scrounging of spare salvage banned for the time being although come June or so will happily donate the surplus shell to anyone that is mad enough to want it!

Fuel tqank is different. Not sure about the engine, whether it has a dizzy or not. Throw all the fuel crap in the bin, fit a 1/3/4 carb and LCB. It may have a 2.76 FD which will make it a bit slow off the blocks.
Clean the engine up, put it on ebay and flog it. Get a 12HF01 unleaded metro engine (sporty one) down at the scrapper.
Injection is utter pants on a 5 port head.

As suggested, best to go with a 1.75" SU HIF44 on a decent inlet manifold. Whilst the lump is out change to a 3.2 diff and make sure the sub-frame is solid mounted. Use electronic ignition (Aldon maybe?) and consider chucking the Verto clutch and fitting a Mk1/Mk2 type clutch and an inertia starter. Use a 12V coil, rather than the 9V with the dodgy ignition resistor lead (ever had one of those burn out? I have! It takes most of the front loom with it)).
Of course, if you're really keen you could do a bit of cleaning up to the head and fit 35.5 mm inlet valves (as the MG Metro). With a decent exhaust manifold and exhaust and an MG Metro cam you could then be looking at around 75 to 80+ bhp at the flywheel (my 1990 car with this done gave 84 bhp).
It'll drive nicely as well with excellent acceleration as the lower diff and lighter early flywheel could knock maybe 3 seconds off the 0-60 time and that's a lot.

Thanks to all - perhaps it may be worth expanding on my dilemma a bit - whilst I enjoy a good thrash about in a fast mini (purely for fun & penalty points) the car I'm building now doesn't have to be a screamer - the equinox was just stumbled across by accident and is an spi - I'm after more grunt than a std 998 & decent reliability I understand diff should be 3.105/1 and was considering swap to 3.44/1 whilst reducing wheels to 10", and slap in my much transplanted set of S discs - going to swap loom over as extant one 25+ years old and I think start off with the injection set up lump in std trim albeit decatted with a maniflow LCB & single box s/e RC40 advice received thus far is that the outright power deficiencies (for fun use) may be compensated for by change of diff and 10" rubber, the injection set up "will cope" - is this right??? I have a huge number of spares lying around from years of playing with mini's - including lumps from a 68 998 cooper, and 84 mayfair lump, an 86 MG metro and a c85 Metro Vanden Plas not forgetting the awful 998 city lump - happy to plunder all the A+ but the cooper sits, turned over weekly sleeping and awaiting the right project - so have 2.95 & 3.44 diffs and HIF carbs without going "shopping". Carbs may come back into the equation later.....
