Stick with 998 or upgrade to 1275
Discussion
Hi, I currently have a 998 cc A+ with 2.95:1 diff ratio and an HS4 carb. I have also got, all new, an AAF needle, K&N filter, alloy inlet manifold, steel exhaust manifold, RC40 box, magnetronic electonic distributor kit.
I do not actually know if engine and box are ok, but the head was off and has been cleaned up and the bores appeared ok, engine turned over ok.
I am not particularly worried about racing from the lights etc, but am more concerned about having a car that would cruise at a reasonable speed on motorways, "A" roads etc and be a comfortably driveable car, (I used to navigate in a 1293 and this was a rocket but not what I am looking for.)
My question is do I have this engine stripped and reconditioned or do I buy a 1275 and then have this stripped and reconditioned. I have looked on ebay and in papers for a 1275 but they seem to be fetching a lot of money or are too far away from me. I don't mind paying for the engine but I am wondering if it is worth the expense as I would then want to have this reconditioned.
Do I stick with the 998 or get a 1275
If I stick with the 998 do I want a differant ratio?
Any help appreciated, Alan

I've a 1275 with about 64bhp at the driving wheels and about 85lb/ft torque @3400. The car will pull 5200/5300 in top on a 3.1 final drive with a flat road and WOT. Cruising at 80mph is just over 4000rpm (with "12 wheels). Your 2.95 diff is great ratio for a 1275 motor and if the engine has good torque (no really long duration cam fitted - recommend short duration with high lift rockers), will pull it with no problems.
