MG Metro turbo fuel problem

sorry didn't mean to be flippant even if i could spell it...
In the 80's (remember the 80's) I had a selection of Metros, seem to remember my MG did about 40mpg, the Turbo did about 30 to 33mpg, had no more performance, was a bit slower if anything, handled better because of the anti roll bar and had more torque steer.
It was also black and folks couldn't see me coming so I had to drive with the lights on all the time.
