Rob - Are you intending driving it daily (in our sh*tty traffic conditions) or is a high days and holidays car? This will ahve a bearing on what you choose.

The 286MD Cam will produce a really quick 998 (providing you have a good head and high compression ratio)- but no torque, and probably no much go under 3K. Would be pain in the arse on the road IMHO. The softer 270 profile will be more driavable but still lively.

Check out the latest Minimagazie for an article on hot cams/tweeked 998's with 12g940 head castings.

I ran a Piper 270 in a 1293 motor.

It was a fantastic street cam.

I expect it might be a bit peaky in a 998, but otherwise I can't fault it.

hi, thanks for the rplys, it is going to have a 12g940 om it, havin probs with the valve seats at the mo. (another story!) i have opted for the 270 because of the average amount of road work that itll do. cheers for the replys, anyone want a new 286?! (just kidding!)

I'd be tempted to put an mg metro cam in one 252/268. That would be good, or something with a weeny bit more exhaust duration, Ie Kents profiles. A 266 or 276. Not higher than that though. I have a 270 in my 1380 and I'm not sure how it goes as the cam is symmetrical. I think the A series prefers a bit more on the exhaust.

I would have thought a 998 would probably shit itself if you made full use of a 286!

Sounds like a fun car, keep us posted with how it goes.

Also heard very good things about the SW 5.

I run a Piper 285 Asymetric in my 998, and it goes like the proverbial off a shovel, post 3500rpm. Mind you the car will do 7000 in 4th. I would probably reccomend against the 12G940 head on the 998 as unless it is done properly and all prepped correctly you can damage the engine, and get very bad power. A nicely ported 12G295 or similar will give a good amount of useable power and torque.

Check the specs of my 998 in my profile and feel free to mail me anytime.

They are good fun, but you need to rev the nuts off them all the time. Took mine out the other day, constantly above 3500rpm. I run a full ported and flowed 12G940 with 35.6 x 31 rimflow valves in it, on my car.
