hey cooperman, are you in nottingham this weekend?
Discussion
No, I decided to give it a miss this year. It's a great event and I did it last year in my 1990 Cooper. We were lying 7th overall until half way through the very last test when I clipped a kerb and snapped the inner lower suspension arm pin - game over! Right at the end of a 1750 mile event as well. Keep an eye on the two Turner brothers in their Metros. They are real good friends and at separate times each of them led for a while last year. Either of them could win this year.
Next year there is the Colway Enduro Championship and my son and I intend to enter all 6 events so I'm working on the Rover 214Si in readiness. It still needs some development work on the front suspension and I've just got a set of polyprop bushes. New Leda struts are on order as well. My son just got a Peugeot 106 Rallye which he is preparing, so we'll have a choice of 2 Enduro cars - he'll let his aged father drive it as well, must have brought him up right.
My '64 Cooper 'S' is almost completed after its comprehensive rebuild over the past few months. It now has a new front wing (I've slightly damaged it several times, always on the driver's side), new sills, new rear valence, etc, plus an all-new s/c c/r box with s/c drops, complete engine rebuild with Karl Schmidt pistons, plus a lot of minor detail work, like all new brake fluid (AP600 Race Fluid). It will be on the road next week for its MoT and for running in. Hooray. Just in time to help me celebrate my 65th birthday a week on Saturday. Now, what shall I do when I grow up!

Promise me that you will never, ever grow up !! Occasionally I think to myself what am I doing still messing about with minis ?? especially when it's cold and wet outside, the "50 year old" driving experience doesn't get any better......... but on those good days it's still a joy to drive a mini and show the rest of the motoring world what a cracking little car it still is.
Best of luck with your projects, I'm sure they will come good for next year.
Phil.

Thanks, Phil,
I had my 65th b'day on Saturday and celebrated it by taking my 11-year old Grandson to marshall all night on the C.M.C. Preston Rally in East Anglia. It was indeed a family affair with 3 generations of my family involved as my son, Mike, was navigating the very rapid Steve Head in his Vauxhall. Unfortunately they retired with a faulty fuel pump solenoid.
However, before the first car was due I took grandson for a fairly rapid trip around one of the forest sections of about 4 miles in my Rover 214Si Enduro formula rally car, which he thought was fabulous. I suppose I was at about 90% effort and we got up to about 85 mph on the loose with some very sideways motoring.
The trouble is, he says, the kids at school don't believe him when he tells them about all this, although he did say that he thinks he has an 'ace' Grandad. I don't know about that, but he is really into rallying and is already a very good Mini mechanic and can do jobs unassisted which some posters on here would find a bit daunting e.g. removal of brake calipers, and hubs/driveshafts.
Get 'em young and teach 'em well and the future of the Mini is assured.
All-in-all a great weekend.
