I have a set of weller wheels which I have taken down to the bare metal. I intend to cover them black and am comtemplating spraying them. I know powder coating would be a better option, but at £80 it is too costly at the mo.

If I spray them what quality finish can I expect and will I have to spray some kind of bar coat (acid etch primer??) first??

Etch primer is only essential on an alloy wheel but a good idea to use it on steel as well as it slows down any rust. The finish doesn't last as well as powder coating but as its much cheaper you can always spray them every few years. Good luck!

Gave them a good coating of the hammerite smooth from a spray can. Its superb stuff, no need for primer and they've come up really nice. £15 for 2 cans so I can't complain at that for a wheel refurb.

Don't forget to lacquer them as that can help stop the rust as well.
