I decided to work from home today and my friend who, lives in the village and has a '97 Sportpack, came to ask me how to get the flywheel off. I had earlier lent him the puller and flywheel lock tool, but he couldn't get the thing of.
So we just ended up with a 2 ft bar and socket, a steel bar and club hammer to hit the flywheel through the starter motor aperture and a big blowtorch. It finally came off when the centre flywheel boss was glowing dull red, I was hitting the 2 ft bar with a hammer and Graham was hitting the flywheel with a big club hammer and the steel bar.
They do get really tight sometimes!

sounds like you had fun , yes they can be real fockers when stuck on, we usually strike centre puller bolt to shock them off - hitting verto flys doesn t work too well as they aren t directly fastened to crank , we ve had to drill em off before - dont like heating them up.
are you using the same fly - beware if not , cos twin points are differant, even though some suppliers wil swear not.

I have suggested he lighten it, but I could do with some advice about sensors, etc, as most of my Minis are Mk 1's and 2's with 'proper' flywheels and clutches, not the nasty Verto ones.
When you compare the Verto with the originals they are so much heavier.
Yes, I tried hitting the bolt on the puller, and hit it very hard I certainly did, but that didn't release it. I've never had to drill one off, but Chris Spennewyn has. Nasty job that. They do seem to come off more easily if they are lapped on in the first place or so it seems to me. Maybe I just take mine off more often though. It's all part of the fun of owning a Mini!
There is no reason not to heat it up to free it off as the temp you get with up to a dull red heat won't hurt the cast crank or the steel of the flywheel. It won't do the clutch plate much good, but that will be changed, of course.

you can lighten them a bit ( every bit helps ) MED do ours , send full assembly nd he'll renew plate nd balance whole lot . you must stick to mpi cover or it will change position of timing marks. they are crap realy as all the weight is mostly on the outer edge , just where you dont want it.
