Evening all. First post in a long time!

Anybody fitted a Moto-lita mk 3 wooden wheel to an MPi Sportspack? How did you wire up the centre horn push?

The airbag's out, the orginal wheel's off & I'm ready to fit the new boss & wheel, but how do I wire up the horn?

The two horn buttons on the orginal Rover wheel connected to the car via a black wire & a red wire, which plugged into a socket above the steering nut.

How do I wire up a centre push Moto-lita horn with a *single* terminal on its underside?

Sorry for silly question & thanks in advance!

Problem solved. If anybody's doing this mod you need a centre horn push with *2* terminals on the underside. I've done a step-by-step guide for anybody who is considering a wheel swap on an airbag-equipped Mini. I could have done with one myself but couldn't find one anywhere!

Hi in your post you suggested that you had solved the wiring problem when fitting a Moto Lita horn push on an MPI mini.

Could you post your solution.

I have a rotary connection and seem to have no space for the wire without drilling through the boss base.

all help gratefully received.

Hi there,

I actually sold my classic Mini last year & replaced it with a 987.2Cayman, but I kept this guide in case it helped others in the future. Hope it assists you!

Parts required :
-Boss kit for MG 'F' £33
-6 hole to 9 hole adaptor ring £55 (BGR) - £65 (Moto-Lita C1)
-14" flat wooden wheel £76-200+
-9 hole finishing ring + allen bolts if your wheel doesn't include them £10
-*2 connector* horn push to match wheel £5-20 (included with Moto-Lita adaptor ring)
-Fused airbag bypass resistor £10 (2.7 ohm)
Total £180-£300

✔ My route : £184
-MGF boss kit £33
-Moto-Lita adaptor ring and horn push £65
-Replica Moto-Lita Mk3 wooden wheel £76
-Airbag delete resistor £10

1. Photograph stty old steering wheel for posterity
2. Carefully remove SRS lettering from dash binnacle warning light lens using cotton bud & a tiny amount of acetone-free nail polish remover (2 min job)
3. Disconnect both battery terminals (13mm socket, negative first)
4. Wait for an hour to let any residual current dissipate from the electrical system
5. Straighten front driving wheels perfectly
6. Undo the 2 torx bolts on the back of the steering wheel itself (T27 torx bit)
7. Carefully lift centre airbag assembly off
8. Gently prise off airbag cable from airbag assembly
9. Unplug horn cable from original steering boss
10. Put airbag assembly to one side (face-up. Don't drop!)
11. Loosen 19mm steering nut but don't completely remove it (3/4" socket fits if you haven't got a 19mm one)
12. Tap steering wheel with rubber mallet to loosen it
13. Remove original steering wheel
14. Gently prise up the horn buttons & disconnect all the horn wiring from the old wheel
15. Carefully re-attach airbag to old wheel & store away in a safe place
16. Feed airbag & horn cables through new MGF boss
17. Fit new boss using original 19mm nylok nut (12 o'clock = straight, 47nm)
18. Fit fused 2.7ohm resistor to airbag plug
19. Fit Moto-Lita adaptor to MGF boss (6 bolts, don't over-tighten or round the allen bolts!)
20. Offer up new wheel
21. Fit new wheel & finishing ring to Moto-Lita adaptor (9 bolts)
22. Connect horn cable to Moto-Lita horn press using spade connectors
23. Push Moto-Lita horn press in place
24. Add steering wheel emblem
25. Reconnect battery (positive first)
26. Re-sync immobiliser fob (4 presses)
27. Test horn & indicator self cancel and make sure SRS light goes out
28. Photograph fabulous new wheel to compare with the horrid old one.
