Has anyone bought this John Cooper works upgrade and if so is it worth the extra £3750 to have supplied and fitted ?
takes the car from 170 to 210 as I understand.

If you are concerned about the warranty go JCW

If you arent go to BBR and get the same thing for £2K less...

Brodie Brittain Racing.

West Tuning do one, as do AmD and loads of others.

The JCW conversion is very well engineered it has to be said.

Most places get 210 by fitting a smaller supercharger pulley and doing a remap.

The JCW conversion includes a new exhaust, cylinder head etc etc.

Its over engineered intentionally I suppose to meet the very stringent BMW warranty requirements.

Ive heard the quality is excellent of the JCW.
For fun though it would be great if they could up the BHP / torque over 210 !

i've got it. Bought the car with the 2004 JCW 200bhp already installed. Then took it for the 2005 upgrade to get 210bhp.

As already stated, only worth the extra ££££ if the warranty / TLC is important to you. It makes a great noise. Just the right amount of power IMHO. Any more and the fronts would light up all the time.

Raify,
Is the acceleration from 0-60 much improved ? and the 0-100 ?
I note the 0-60 on the JCW site is half a second faster but in real world terms how does this equate ?

I'm not sure of the actual figures, half a second here or there I assume. It just feels a lot more responsive, shaper. You get a very noticeable boost as the air flap opens at 4,500 revs.

There's also a quite decent increase in low-down torque.

If you can get down to Arundel, I recommend speaking to John Coopers. They normally have a demonstrator on hand.

Its situated at East Preston.

The down side to the JCW 210 Convertible is that we cannot get the JCW Sports Seats fitted to the convertible as they say it has yet to be approved in this model, so they will not fit them which is a shame.

Nice looking seats though!

East Preston, that's it! I've been there 4/5 times, and can never remember the name. I actually bought the car from them, and went back for the extra 10 horses.

Shame about the seats, I have them and they're really worth it. They are only re-trimmed Cobra's (or something similar) perhaps there's another (non JCW) model that will fit. The JCW seats make getting in the back v. difficult. They don't fold/slide at the same time, and don't fold enough due to large side bolsters. IMO, the original seats are utter rubbish.

I suppose with the convertible, you won't be using the rears much anyway.

The seats are quality though but we are using the car as a 3rd car to ferry the twins to and from school so we need the rear seats.

The rear seats are actually more spacious than in our Jeep!

I just replaced the Mrs's 200hp car for a new 210 hp car and can vouch for the fact that it's a vast improvement especially low-down in the rev range. Also can agree that the JCW seats are absolutely fantastic despite the £1600 price tag.

OK, a bit of information for you....

The JCW package at 210hp is a BMW factory approved and warrantied product. That means you can take your car to ANY dealership in the country with a problem and say fix it, and they will... Thats part of what you pay your £3500 for with the works conversion.

Conversely with the alternate tuners out there you can buy bigger bang for bucks but you will infringe your warranty rights, certainly in a lot of cases lose any TLC cover you have, and in some cases maybe even shorten the lifespan of the car!

Now then, an interesting fact, if you go to John Cooper Garages and say I want 230/275/300hp and forget my warranty, they can and will do that for you -- they just can't publicise it! Now in the scheme of things in terms of a development engineering company who are testing cars constantly for BMW, who are building race cars for one make series and will transfer all that into a road going car just for you... I know where my money would be going for a possibly non warrantied, non TLC'd car... may not be cheap but I think it would be a better investment

Didn't EVO do a like4like comparison on various options JCW, BBR etc. a while back? Made for interesting reading IIRC.

Having driven Raify's when it was a 200 and been in it since the 210 conversion I can tell (even as a passenger) that there's an improvement... plus you can't get the idiot out of the damn thing he enjoys it so much

Yeah you pay a premium for the JCW kit BUT I do believe it's extremely well engineered, very well tested and as a result is an apparently very well put together solution which of pretty much bomb-proof quality. Plus you don't invalidate TLC etc.

They did, I can dig out the issue later tonight if anyone likes. Might even be on www.evo.co.uk
It was before the 210 JCW kit was available IIRC

Yeah, sorry about that! It's hard enough prising the keys from the hands of my better half! You're long overdue a go with the extra 10 ponies...

This is all not doing too much for my bank balance! I'm off to JCG very soon to get all the goodies (engine kit, suspension, strut brace. brakes) can't wait, for some reason money has little imfluence in my decisions for Mini upgrades!
