Yep. It looks like an overdesigned, overweight little blob. Give me faulty heaters and rock hard suspension any day!

Youve got it mate. New ones are no fun. There expensive to modify and expensive to run.

When the mkI came along in 1959 it was the most technologically advanced car the world had seen. This new "big" mini was designed for over payed managers and blondes. Its a retro icon "WANNABE". The original can not ever be bettered. Oh yeah, its german, enough said.

How can £100 for five years hassle free motoring and servicing be expensive to run ??!!

I am a fan and owner of both old and new mini's and they both have their place. You've got to move with the times..... and remember the only constant is change!

If Cooper can accept it, so can I.

So for a car to be fun you need to be able to modify it cheaply? Different to my criteria, thats for sure. I guess you haven't driven one. Pistonheads is supposed to be a "motor enthuisiasts" forum, if you want to spout pompus bollix slating the new MINI then I'd suggest a visit to www.unreliablecrampedcoldbox.bitter.org

I've owned both original mini's and new mini's and they're both great, if very different, cars. As far as i'm concerned, the new mini is excellent. No hassle servicing, great handling, classy styling and funky interior. The original has and will always have a special place both for owners and fans, but to be able to buy a brand new quality car with the essence of the original is brilliant.

I dont agree on the handling dynamics point but in comparison with the original I do.

Its a big handbag, a fun, well engineered big handbag but a big handbag nonetheless...

I own an old one and have driven a friends MINI extensively. Its a nice car, but to suggest it has any character or inherent sportiness would be ridiculous. Its just so bloody bland - looks like a Daihatsu from the front and nothing much from the rear!

Blimey, well I guess that makes you an authority on all things MINI; I bow to your steadfast opinion. I've only OWNED a MINI1 and NOW OWN a MINI2 so obviously I must be biased.
Now please, enough of the banal rantings about the MINI2. How "sporty" is car that doesn't handle on a bumpy b-road? How sporty is a car that hits 60mph in a rip roaring 13 seconds at best?

PS I believe Boots run a perfectly adequate optician service. (MINI2 looks like a Daihatsu )

TD, just to point out.

Classic: Mini
New: MINI

Not MINI and MINI2

I'll get back in me box.

Oh and just for the record, 60 comes up in a little under half that time

hey just taking my cue from the MINI2 site OK, I get it

"60 comes up in a little under half that time" In a Cooper S perhaps, but not in old one without mods. Unless you drive off a cliff. Which I wouldn;t recommend as the MINI doesn't have airbags or crumple zones. Unless of course you love the old A-series so much you want to be "as one" with it "Put the gearbox in the engine? MAD I TELL YOU!

My old clubman was great fun, and occasionally terrifying 1275 top end mated to a 998 gearbox made for "interesting" acceleration (2nd gear wheelspin easy) but 75mph=valve bounce I remember it tried to kill me once with massive plough on understeer in the wet, on the other hand it was stupidly funny through some of Peterborough's smooth wide roundabouts
