id say 4.5

if you run them on a std 3.5 they roll about a fair bit. not a nice feeling at all.

I don't understand people fitting 165's to rims less than 5" wide, the roll is more noticable. I reckon 4.5" is optimum for 145's. In fact my favourite wheel tyre combo are 145's on S rims. Sadly I have upped the power so much that 145's just smoke so in order to get the same "feeling", I am using 165's on 7", that feels about right.

If I was running a stock mini, I would use 145's I reckon. It just seems "better", if you know what I mean? It drifts more predictably (not on the roads of course )

the problem of course is finding a good 145. i use 165s on the 4.5 minispares wheels that dont stick out the bodywork.

That's exactly what I use for my forest tyres which are 165/70x10. For tarmac I have 5" with 165/70x10 and they do stick out na bit from the wheelarch, but in many years I've had no problem with scrutineers on this. I don't like wheel arch extensions on a '64 Cooper 'S' and they are just more bits to break of when rallying.
