I'm putting a new clutch in my rebuilt 1293 along with fitting lightened flywheel and back plate. Only problem is, there are no timing marks or alignment marks to ensure its properly aligned for balance. There's not even one on the new diaphragm. It was assembled when I got it from the machine shop but I never checked for marks before taking apart as assumed they would be there. Do I need to go back to shop to get it assembled in correct orientation and marked up?

if its a race car / expensive engine then it should be balanced/clearly marked as a unit (the backplate, flywheel and spring) and marked accordingly so that its kept in a 'set' so the three bolts are always going into the same three holes.

if its just a road car then its easy to sort out.

set the engine to tdc using the marks at the other end (or look at the rockers) - fit the flywheel and make sure it matches the offset groove in the crank - it will only fit one way if the tdc is correct.

mark the threaded hole that's at 12 o clock with a dab of paint, if you refit the china mans hat you will be able to mark tdc on the flywheel with paint using the mark (which will be a little to the left of 12 o clock)

once you remove the flywheel you (should) be able to see an 'A' stamped on the spring (or a dab of paint) near one of the bolt holes, this lines up with the '12 o clock' hole on the fly wheel, likewise the backplate (if standard) will have a 'A' stamped on one of its legs, again, this will line up with the other two marks. this will do as a marked set.

the timing marks on the flywheel are not much use, I always mark the front pulley as its far easier to use a timing light on these

Thanks.

Problem isn't so much timing, it's more the balance of components I'm concerned about as there are no dabs of paint, a marks or any other markings to show which orientation the flywheel/ backplate and diaphram should be.
