With the fuel gauge trying to tell me the tank is empty and I don't think it is I started to trace the wiring.
Instrument cluster out, trying to decide which wire is the live, and how to test the voltage stabiliser. Any clues?
Its a two instrument Clubman BTW

The fuel tank sensor is a easy place to start, it's just a big floaty arm thing that can be moved externally, or prodded (lifted) with a suitable shaped wire coat hanger to see if it reads.... Also electrical terminals on fuel tank are prone to loosening....

Don't seem to have power to the tank hence the question, thanks though

The older type of voltage stabilser is like a flasher unit - it switches on and off to give an average of 10v (or maybe 5v). Sometimes you can hear them ticking.

Not sure where it is on a clubman - on a round nose its on the back of the speedo.

12v supply wire is solid green - the short wire to the gauge is light green - the wire to the tank is green with a black trace.

Check the fuse is OK.

Hi
The stabiliser on the Clubbie 2 dial dash plugs into the back of the instrument cluster and the cluster has a multiplug with about 8 wires.
At the minute I'm not sure if its the feed to the stabiliser, the stabiliser itself or feed from that to the tank.

I assume it also stabilises the voltage to the temp guage but as I haven't run the car in a while I cannot tell if that is off too.

Now have a "dip stick", the tank is half full

Who me ?

you could do a rough & ready test on the temp gauge, by looking for 12v at the temperature sender.
Can't remember which does which , but wire off at engine unit gives( if memory serves) cold, earth gives fully hot. ( ign on ,obviously).
Was going to suggest an electronic bodge to get round a faulty voltage stabiliser, but this http://www.britishv8.org/articles/mgb-voltage-stab... ( it's for an MGB), is SIMILAR PRINCIPLE ( and explains it better),although you may need to find the stabilised voltage. Personally, I'd suggest that it's 10, as I'd see Badly Made Cars using the gauges from pre stabilised models .
