So I was standing (actually on my knees) in the garage, removing the water pump and checking the compressions for poss h/g failure and thought, "all this radiator and fan stuff doesn't half get in the way of checking the ignition timing and if it wasn't there I might have found the water pump bolts trying to leave the scene of the crime". First brainwave was could the car run ok without the fan and the second was could the radiator turn through 90 degrees and drop in front of the alternator. It is a Clubby so a bit of room to get it in. I only seem to use it for the odd trip down the A1 to Harewood and odd burst up the hill. Never goes out I traffic anymore, sometimes around the lanes to work or collect the laddy from school. In fact it rarely get out at all as it's blocked in the garage by a few other things.
Then I went back in for a cup of tea.

Polo 6n rad, full electronic ignition, smaller alternator, external electric fan, custom hoses.

Stock rad is generally too thick to fit between the alternator and the front panel, with a round nose it's also too tall in normal orientation.

Although easier with a clubby as you state.
