The flywheel bolt on my Swiftune motor was held on by thread locking compound, not a locking washer. Is this the preferred way of doing it now? If so, which locking compound should I use and should I replace the bolt with a new one. If I go back to a locking washer, will I need a longer bolt? Also the workshop manual states that sometimes an "encapsulated bolt" was fitted. What is this, a bolt already covered in locking compound??
The Verto flywheels use the 'encapsulated' bolt. This is, basically, a bolt with a built-in lock washer.
It would seem highly non-recommended to fit the flywheel bolt without any lock washer when you think of the very major damage a loose flywheel can cause (like a broken crank).
I always lap the flywheel onto the crankshaft with fine valve grinding-in paste, use a lock washer and use 'Loctite' thread locking adhesive.
Do it up 'FT ' as well, not less than 150 ft.lbs.
