we have had this Mini in the family since new. still have the invoice (£499-00). Toolkit etc never opened. The car has about 50K on the clock. It is sound both mechanically and bodily; with all the original carpets, trim etc. It has had paintwork over the years and probably now needs a respray to do it justice. My question to all you Mini fans out there is: Do I do it? or do I leave it to a prospective buyer to see it as it is; and leave any restoration work to them. And of course the big question - What is it worth? Any input would be most welcome.

I wouldn't consider respraying it if your just looking to sell it on

id much rather pay decent money for a shabby original mk1 than one that had just had a blow over to sell it.

people want the original stuff, nothing sells a car like 'barn find'

ebay, the mk1 performance forum or a decent auction house like bonhams would be able to move it on for you.

value? 1500 pounds upwards id say

I would have to agree with the above. The restored cars never get there money but the untuched cars all seem to get more than you would think. Like all in this world it not a 100% but a good paint job would be £1000 you would not get that back on the price and a quick blow over may even dro the price (What is under the paint and why did they not to it properly).

Is it a runner with an MOT?

Earlier this year i paid £4K for a 65 850, new MOT, 65K miles. Mine has the correct 4 vent sills, the doors are without any blistering, original solid floor. Quite pleased with this, its not perfect but a great genuine little runabout, 'restored' cars seem to demand twice the money.

There was a very early pick up auctioned locally for £16K, i mean £16K for a pick up, not a cooper, a pick up!

Btw, its a Mini not a MINI, the latter are something quite different....

I stand corrected on that one-thanks. The car has been off the road for twenty years; but has been in heated storage the whole time. I have chipped away at minor things like fuel pump door rubbers and minor things to keep the car looking presentable. We drive it round the unit periodically, so I know that all is basically sound, but there is no current MOT.

Recommendation is get MOT on it, then it seems you can look forward to a much greater return on your efforts keeping it "ticking" over whilst in storage.
