I am looking at buying a 96 mpi cooper, its not sports pack and is generally very original. Loads of history and only 2 owners. Its Done 100k Miles but was always serviced. Question is, is it worth getting, its not badly rotten, wants a wing and a few scabs sorting out but not the usual terror. What's it worth in tidy , mot.d condition so i no that i.l get out ok if i need to sell? Thanks

It's always good to have a look at the mini mags to see what they are going for but I would say about 2-3K if the rott is not to bad. But do have a good look a lot can hide around the place. If bad you could be looking 1K or below.

These cars sell for £850-£6000. The majority are in the £1800-3500 bracket.

Work wise if your description is honest as in, you have had a proper look, I would say 500-1000 in body work + 500 for stuff you missed then 750-2000 on an engine refresh. 100k is close to the end of a A-series life if it's been cared for. So what's it worth?

Well if you budget carefully, look hard, and have the time and flexibility to undertake it; it's worth a brilliant car, a fantastic sense of ownership and satisfaction, and a little life story. It's going to cost you at least, 2k plus the purchase price, unless it's a little gem.

Do it.

Excellent advice. I have enjoyed Minis for 54 years and they are an exceptionally rewarding fun car. And not silly money to buy, run, own and maintain. The A series in Minis suffers from the gearbox using the engine oil The gearbox in turn suffers from the absence of decent viscosity hypoid oil. A brilliant compromise giving the greatest passenger space of any small car but longevity is reduced. I would suggest that most Mini engines need rebuilding well before 100,000 miles. In other cars such as the Minor without the gearbox mucking up the oil the A series can very probably achieve that figure. I still own three Minis, a 1.8 K series Cooper convertible, a 1340 racer, a 998 cc Neon, a Mini Marcos, and two Midas cars. I have not been without a Mini in 40 odd years. And they have been odd years!! smile
